Whether you’re a fan of bold scarlet, deep burgundy or earthy terracotta, there are a number of ways to work this season’s biggest colour into your interior design scheme. No other colour is as physical and powerful as red. Red is strong, persuasive, passionate, brave, angry, intense, dangerous, energetic, joyful, courageous… the list goes on. Brave shades of red play big roles in both of Pantone’s AW17 colour reports. The New York palette is introduced by confident Grenadine, a dynamic and impactful colour that brings a touch of exoticism. Across the Atlantic in London, vivid Flame Scarlet leads the way, a super strong and classic shade. While these versions of red are bold choices, it’s still possible to enjoy the colour in softer, more understated variations.
Different tints and shades will make a world of difference to your red interior design. For example, a light tone of reddish blush is feminine and casual, orange red is more warming and spicy, and dark berry shades bring a sense of drama. Brick red is an earthy take on the trend, while Chinese red is more opulent. Incorporate these colours through accessories and soft furnishings. Lamp shades work particularly well for accents, as do vases, cushions and art prints. If you’re feeling a little braver, an accent wall in your favourite shade of red will be a surefire boost to the space. Investment pieces like sofas and armchairs can also be selected in red, and paired with various furnishings to achieve your desired style.
