Seaside-inspired interiors are a timeless trend, but this season, coastal interiors have become more experimental. Here’s everything you need to know to achieve the look…
The idea of coastal interiors may conjure images of fishing boat prints, rope weaves and shells scattered across shelving units. While these looks still play a huge part in the trend, we’re now seeing a more grown-up and experimental approach to the traditional seaside look.
For instance, a sophisticated way to replicate ‘Fisherman’s Cabin’ style would be with sheer curtains and voiles. These light, sheer fabrics nod towards fishing net in a subtle and feminine way, allowing the breeze into your home. Layer these over shutters for a charming coastal effect, or underneath a heavier duty pair of curtains to ensure optimum functionality in terms of light control, privacy and thermal efficiency.
Woods are also a great choice, and can be mixed with the modern nautical styles for an interesting result. But while lighter and white-washed woods will always be coastal, darker woods like walnut can also work well. Team these with your nautical interiors for a more dramatic look, creating an interesting combination of rich earth and water. This works particularly well in the living room, where we want to create a more warm and welcoming space.
The bathroom is often the favoured spot to explore coastal interiors. When it comes to the window dressing, consider a faux wooden blind, which will bring the charm of the seashore whilst offering moisture resistance and easy cleaning. A printed uPVC roller blind will also work well.
For both children’s rooms and kitchens, fish and bird prints will bring a nautical excitement into the space. Puffins in particular are proving popular at the moment, injecting a coastal feeling in a cute and playful way. With this in mind, you shouldn’t be afraid of ‘fun’ prints on your soft furnishings to achieve a coastal look, whilst keeping the rest of the room neutral and simple.
For a more magical coastal look for kids, consider mermaids, treasure maps and submarines. All of these prints work beautifully on curtains and blinds, as well as lamp shades and cushions.
The colour of the year is coral, and this permeates through to the coastal trend too. This includes coral-coloured fabrics as well as home accessories that are reminiscent of coral, such as sculptures and bowls. A coral twist on coastal is a modern approach, and ideal if you’re not a big fan of the traditional red and blue colour palette.
