The Seventies was a decade of great change, which had a huge influence on interior styles.
From its thriving music scene and renewed respect for the environment, to soaring inflation and technological advancements, the diversity of happenings in the ’70s all contributed to cultural shifts and, consequently, brand new interior trends. These new looks blended high-tech items with sleek geometric shapes, along with a healthy dose of natural materials and soft textures, making for some truly exciting results.

70s Colours
70s styles focus mainly around warm earthy colours, such as tan, mustard, soft pink, avocado and gold. This reflected the decade’s new regard for nature, along with the desire to be peaceful and cosy following a tumultuous few years.
Along with these natural shades, bright teal, purple, yellow and green can also be used throughout the home. White is also a popular choice, used specifically as a backdrop for darker and brighter colours.
70s Patterns
To bring Seventies-inspired prints into your space, consider geometric or floral pattern repeats. Paisley patterns are another great way to achieve this style, along with mushroom prints (yes, mushrooms were a key trend in the 1970s!) If you’re feeling brave, you could even experiment with a touch of psychedelic, though these prints should be approached with care.
All ’70s patterns can be featured on soft fabrics, such as window dressings and cushions, as well as flooring or wall tiles. This includes terrazzo, which is perhaps one of the biggest nods to the decade that we’ve seen. This trend was extremely popular during the Seventies, utilised in work surfaces, lamps and vases. Nowadays, you can incorporate the terrazzo look through your textiles, choosing fabrics that are printed with the ‘perfectly imperfect’ pattern.
70s Materials
Natural materials played a big role throughout the 1970s, and now, we can achieve the same vibes with a variety of items including rattan, shag rugs and macrame. Rattan in a particular is a good choice, and can utilised in side tables, chairs or headboards for an injection of retro.
Houseplants are also an effective way to channel ’70s style. When it comes to greenery, the bigger and more unusual, the better! Monstera, trailing vines, spider plants and cacti can all work wonderfully. For smaller plants, consider hanging (a macrame plant pot decoration will look great) or placing in groups on shelves. Larger ones, such as cheese plants, could be placed in baskets for an even more ‘natural’ look.
