In the hustle and bustle of modern life, finding solace and sanctuary within our own homes has become increasingly important. Creating a space that fosters relaxation, comfort, and a sense of security has led to the rise of a design concept known as “cool cocooning.” This approach celebrates the art of making our homes a personal haven, where we can unwind, recharge, and truly love the space we inhabit. Today, we’ll be taking a closer look at cool cocooning and how you can enjoy it in your home.

What is cool cocooning?

In our 2023 Interior Design Trends Predictions blog we said that cocooning was going to be a great trend this year and we were right! In that blog, we talked about heavy fabrics, soft materials and warming country inspired patterns to help encourage stylish relaxation, but do these components feature in cool cocooning? In short, the answer is yes! Cool cocooning takes many of the core elements of regular cocoon spaces, but with a hint more fun.

Jewel tones, velvets and plenty of soft cushions are key to curating a cool cocoon. By finding the right colours, you can make a space that’s cosy in the depths of winter, but also bright and welcoming during the summer months.

Moreover, you can enjoy cool cocooning around the home. One of the best spaces to make a cool cocoon is in the living room. Here, you can enjoy the limits of comfort in effortless style when either switching off or entertaining friends and family. Likewise, you can also manifest a cool cocoon in the bedroom where you can recover from the pressures of modern living in peace and quiet. But what are the steps you should take to make a cool cocoon? Read on…

How to make a cool cocoon

Cocooning is synonymous with comfort, so focus on function over form. Large, deep, comfortable sofas covered in throws with plenty of quality scatter cushions is an excellent foundation for what could be more comfortable than reclining in front of a great movie, or with a good book? For best effect, ensure your sofa, the cushions and throws have plenty of tactile textures.

Soft light

That said, cool cocooning doesn’t begin and end with the sofa – there is much more you can do! Ensuring your space has plenty of access to soft light will also help with your cocoon area. For natural light, fitting voiles or Illusion blinds to your windows will allow gently filtered light to enter the space which will make you calm and peaceful. For the evening, you’ll still need light, so finding the ideal lamp shade is equally important.

Lamp shades

Lamp shades are often overlooked in many rooms, but they are a fabulous opportunity to add in some extra colours, patterns or fabrics. In a space where you want to cocoon, look at vibrant shades of velvet with curved patterns like spots, florals or paisleys. For the extra cool finish, pick either a brush silver, gold or copper inner to add a chic, shimmering finish.

Cool cocoon window dressings

Moving away from the centre of the room to the walls and windows, you can use a great selection of soft window furnishings to craft a cool cocoon.

Curtains and Roman blinds

Two of the best contenders here are curtains and Roman blinds. Because of the thickness of both items, they intrinsically make any space feel more cosy and comfy. The gentle waves found in a floor length curtain, or the chic straight lines of a Roman blind will add structure to your decor, while adding depth.

Thermal linings

It’s hard to get comfy and cosy when you’re cold, this is where the second advantage of curtains and Roman blinds comes into play. At Blinds Direct, we offer free lining upgrades on all Roman blinds and curtains and for a truly cosy space, nothing can beat a thermal lining.

Thermal linings keep heat in during the colder months of the year while in the summer, they will keep the heat out. This, in turn, means less energy is needed to keep a space warm which not only saves money, but the environment too helping you to enjoy style in an ethical fashion!
