Brand New Recycled Fabrics at Blinds Direct
Today we’re delighted to make one of our most exciting announcements of the year… We’ve launched a brand new range of recycled fabrics, made from recycled single use plastic.
The problem with plastic
Across the globe, 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year. 40% of that plastic is single use, which means it will only be used once (even though it takes up to 1000 years to decompose!) Every day, millions of pieces of plastic find their way into our oceans, totalling 8 million tonnes of plastic each year. It is estimated that there is now over 5 trillion macro and micro plastics floating in the ocean. With our brand new 100% recycled fabrics, we’re hoping to do our bit in reducing the problem of single use plastic.
Working with our supplier, Hispano Tex, we are now pleased to announce that we are stocking brand new recycled fabric at Blinds Direct, made from single use plastic bottles.
How is recycled fabric produced?
In order to produce the fabric, used plastic bottles are gathered and chopped up into tiny pieces. The pieces are melted and formed into flakes, which are then spun in recycled yarn and crafted into fabric. It takes up to 50 plastic bottles to create 1 meter of fabric! Each stage of the fabric production is certified, from the beginning of the recycling process to the final transaction.

Other benefits of recycled fabrics
Along with reducing plastic waste, there are a number of other benefits to choosing recycled fabrics. These include the reduction of fossil fuels, water consumption and energy, as well as fewer chemical products and significantly reduced CO2 emissions. Recycling also helps to conserve our planet’s precious natural resources and reduces the need for mining, quarrying and logging.
